Organ & tissue donation

Research progress depends on the availability of precious tissue and organs from individuals with Rett Syndrome. Donating tissue and organs is a selfless act of love which shows a strong commitment to research and the future well being of Rett sufferers.

Tissues can be donated when an individual undergoes surgery while organs are donated at the time of death.

Omar Khwaja, M.D., Ph.D. medical director of the Rett Syndrome Program at Children's Hospital Boston is establishing a biobank for donated tissue and organs. What is unique to this collection is the phenotypic information that will accompany the physical specimen. Specimens from the biobank, along with clinical data, will be available to the scientific community at large.  Dr. Khwaja can be reached via phone at 617.953. 0022 or email.

Dr. Khwaja is collaborating with Philip Schwartz, Ph.D. Director of the National Human Neural Stem Cell Resource. This organization creates stem cell lines from donated brain tissue and makes them available to the research community. Once the Rett Syndrome neural stem cells have been created, all precious tissue will be sent to Dr. Khwaja.

Dr. Schwartz can be contacted anytime at 877.206.5236 or via email. He will make all the necessary arrangements directly with the pathologist. It is important to note that donating organs will not interfere with any funeral arrangements, including viewing. The NHNSCR will cover any expense related to the donation.

You may also decide to donate organs directly to Dr. Khwaja.

Organ donation is a highly personal decision that has the power to accelerate research and transform the lives of countless families affected by Rett Syndrome.
