Founder, Circle of Confusion
Lawrence Mattis gave up his career as an attorney to become the founder of Circle of Confusion, a New York-based management company representing writers and directors in the film industry.
He has been particularly successful at launching new talent. Among Circle's clients are Larry and Andy Wachowski (creators of The Matrix Trilogy), Simon Kinberg (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, X-Men 3), James McTeigue (director of V for Vendetta), Gregg Chabot and Kevin Peterka (Reign of Fire), Iris Yamashita (Letter From Iwo Jima), and emerging young film makers such as Franck Vesteil (Eden Log) and JT Petty (The Burrowers), both of whom premiered their films at Toronto 2008.
Circle also represents video game creators and comic book authors, most notably the Eisner Award-winning creator of “Powers,” Brian Michael Bendis (also writer of Ultimate Spiderman, X-Men, Daredevil, and Fantastic Four for Marvel).
In 2002, Mattis expanded the operations of Circle of Confusion to include a Los Angeles office and a more active production agenda. Circle has set up a multitude of projects, including films at Warner Brothers, Disney, Universal, New Regency, Fox, New Line, and Paramount. In television production, Circle has an exclusive deal with Sony, with a dozen projects in development. Circle produced the pilot Them for Fox which was directed by Jonathan Mostow (Terminator 3, Breakdown), and currently has Ultra in development for CBS with Stephen Hopkins (24) directing.
Circle also has a strategic partnership with its client, Foundation 9, the largest independent video game developer in the world, to create original IP franchises across multiple media platforms.
Mattis received his JD from Columbia University. Despite the fact that he has been told the film business is based in Los Angeles, he works and lives in New York City with his wife, Frances, and daughter, who is diagnosed with an MECP2 disorder.
